Exploring the rhythmic segmentation of heard speech using evoked potentials

چکیده
This study examines, via evoked potentials called closurepositive-shifts (CPSs), how listeners segment heard utterances on-line. The aim was to determine whether marks of rhythm groups in heard utterances can evoke CPSs independent of varying intonation and syntactic structures. Ten subjects were presented with sets of utterances bearing changing intonation and syntax and the results show that CPS is specifically evoked by marks of RGs.

Size of rhythm-groups affects the memory trace of heard words in utterances: Results from a pilot study using evoked potentials
Since speech involves fleeting acoustic events some portions of heard utterances must be parsed and stored on-line in order to be interpreted. Our previous work has shown that in recalling novel series, rhythmic grouping of up to 4 syllables facilitates memory, and this corresponds to size limits on rhythm groups observed in speech. Such results suggest that prosodic groups can correspond to th...
متن کاملPerceptual tests of rhythmic similarity: I. Mora rhythm.
Listeners rely on native-language rhythm in segmenting speech; in different languages, stress-, syllable- or mora-based rhythm is exploited. The rhythmic similarity hypothesis holds that where two languages have similar rhythm, listeners of each language should segment their own and the other language similarly. Such similarity in listening was previously observed only for related languages (En...

Listeners rely on nativelanguage rhythm in segmenting speech; in different languages, stress-, syllableor mora-based rhythm is exploited. This language-specificity affects listening to non-native speech, if native procedures are applied even though inefficient for the non-native language. However, speakers of two languages with similar rhythmic interpretation should segment their own and the ot...

UNLABELLED The entrainment of slow rhythmic auditory cortical activity to the temporal regularities in speech is considered to be a central mechanism underlying auditory perception. Previous work has shown that entrainment is reduced when the quality of the acoustic input is degraded, but has also linked rhythmic activity at similar time scales to the encoding of temporal expectations. To under...
